Sustainability in apparel gets talked about a lot and measured rarely. Our approach at Istanbul Clothing Factory is to name the specific certifications we hold, the specific inputs we control, the specific things we don't yet control, and the specific 2030 targets we're working against. Everything on this page is auditable, we don't claim what we can't document.
Our Approach: Five Levers
Five decisions determine whether a garment is genuinely lower-impact than the average. We control four of them directly and influence the fifth:
- Fibre choice. Organic cotton vs conventional. Recycled polyester vs virgin. Blends matter more than most brands realise, a "sustainable" garment with 95% conventional polyester and 5% organic cotton isn't sustainable at any meaningful scale.
- Dye and wet processing. The single largest water, energy and chemical impact in the garment life cycle. Our dyeing is subcontracted to two long-term partner dye houses operating under Turkish Ministry of Environment discharge permits and ZDHC MRSL compliance.
- Energy source. Our facility runs on Turkish grid electricity with a growing renewable share. Full renewable transition is a 2030 target.
- Waste and offcuts. Cutting-floor fabric offcuts are baled and sold to Turkish recycled-yarn spinners, who turn them back into recycled cotton yarn for the next season. Nothing goes to landfill from our cutting floor.
- Labor conditions. Directly controlled: hours, wages, safety, grievance mechanism. Audited annually under BSCI and SMETA 4-Pillar.
Certifications, In Depth
OEKO-TEX Standard 100
Third-party laboratory testing of finished textile products for harmful substances (heavy metals, formaldehyde, pesticide residues, chlorinated phenols, azo dyes, and around 300 other regulated and monitored parameters). Our certification covers finished cotton knitwear and applies at the finished-garment level, meaning the fabric, sewing thread, elastic, print inks and dye all pass the test together. Renewed annually.
OCS (Organic Content Standard)
Textile Exchange programme that certifies the organic cotton content of a final product and its chain of custody from certified organic farm through spinning, knitting, dyeing and cut-and-sew. OCS 100 = 95%+ organic content; OCS Blended = 5-94%. Our OCS certification covers our organic cotton fabric library.
RCS (Recycled Claim Standard)
Textile Exchange programme that certifies recycled content (post-consumer and pre-consumer) and chain of custody. RCS 100 = 95%+ recycled; RCS Blended = 5-94%. Our RCS certification covers our recycled polyester (rPET) and recycled cotton fabric library.
Better Cotton
Mainstream sustainability standard covering conventional cotton grown under Better Cotton Principles & Criteria (reduced pesticide use, water efficiency, decent work, biodiversity). Sold as mass-balance credits. Our Better Cotton membership lets clients claim Better Cotton content on their finished product.
BSCI (Business Social Compliance Initiative)
Amfori BSCI audit covering 13 performance areas, social management, workers involvement and protection, freedom of association, non-discrimination, fair remuneration, decent working hours, occupational health & safety, no child labour, no bonded labour, environmental protection, ethical business behaviour, plus follow-up and grievance mechanism. Independent third-party audit, renewed annually.
SEDEX (SMETA 4-Pillar)
Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit covering four pillars: Labour Standards, Health & Safety, Environment, and Business Ethics. Complementary to BSCI, often specifically requested by UK retail buyers. Our SEDEX audit report is available under NDA.
2030 Sustainability Roadmap
Four specific targets, measured against a 2020 baseline, published to clients on request each year:
- Water: 50% reduction in litres of water per kilogram of finished garment across our supply chain by 2030.
- Fibre mix: 60% of total fibre input from organic (OCS/GOTS) or recycled (RCS/GRS) sources by 2030.
- Energy: 100% renewable electricity for our own facility by 2030 (via on-site solar + green tariff).
- Packaging: Zero petroleum-based polybag waste by 2030, full transition to home-compostable film or recycled paper mailer as the default packaging.
What We Don't Do (Yet)
Full life-cycle assessment per SKU, we don't publish a per-garment CO2e figure yet because we don't trust the primary data behind most published fashion LCAs. We're building the internal data collection to change that. Regenerative agriculture cotton sourcing is not currently in our supply chain. Full closed-loop water recycling in our partner dye houses is on the 2030 roadmap but not yet in place.
Frequently Asked Questions
OEKO-TEX Standard 100, OCS, RCS, Better Cotton, BSCI, SEDEX, all current and renewed on schedule.
OCS certifies organic cotton content and chain of custody. GOTS adds wet-processing (dye, print, finishing) chemistry and full-chain social criteria. GOTS is stricter and covers more. OCS is often sufficient when the buyer needs verified organic content without the full processing-chemistry chain.
50% water reduction per kg finished garment; 60% organic or recycled fibre input; 100% renewable electricity for our facility; zero petroleum-based polybag waste.
