If there's one document that separates professional brand founders from amateurs, it's the tech pack. A tech pack is your garment's blueprint | a detailed technical specification document that tells your manufacturer exactly how to build your product. Without one, you're hoping your manufacturer can read your mind. With one, you have a legal and creative foundation for every production decision.
What Is a Tech Pack?
A tech pack (short for technical package) is a multi-page document, typically a PDF or spreadsheet, that contains every piece of information a pattern maker, sample room, and production floor needs to manufacture your garment correctly. It's the single source of truth between your creative vision and the factory output.
Think of it as an architectural drawing for clothing. Just as a builder cannot construct a building from a photograph, a factory cannot produce a garment from a mood board or reference photo alone. They need dimensions, materials, construction details, and tolerances.
What a Complete Tech Pack Must Include
A professional tech pack for a streetwear garment | let's use a heavyweight hoodie as an example | should contain the following sections:
1. Cover Page / Style Information
- Brand name and style number
- Style name and season
- Gender and target fit (oversized, regular, etc.)
- Colorway names and Pantone references
- Revision date and version number
2. Technical Sketch (Flat)
A clean, front and back technical illustration showing every design element: seam placements, pocket positions, zipper placement, drawcord routing, rib cuffs and hem, and any print or embroidery areas with exact placement measurements.
3. Measurement Specification Chart (Spec Sheet)
This is the most critical page. It lists every measurement point for every size you're producing. For a hoodie, this includes chest width, body length, sleeve length, sleeve opening, hood height, front rise (if applicable), and 20+ additional measurements. Each measurement has a tolerance (e.g., ±0.5cm) that defines acceptable variation.
4. Bill of Materials (BOM)
A complete list of every material and component used in the garment: main fabric (including weight, composition, and certification), lining or fleece backing, zipper brand and size, drawcord material and width, eyelets, label specifications, thread colors (with Pantone or manufacturer references), and packaging requirements.
5. Construction Details
Stitch type for every seam (chain stitch, lock stitch, flatlock, overlock), seam allowances, panel construction sequence, and special finishing instructions like brushed interior or garment washing.
6. Print / Embroidery Artwork
Vector files for all printed or embroidered elements, with exact placement dimensions and color breakdowns. For screen print: number of colors, ink type, and print order. For embroidery: stitch count, thread colors (with Pantone), and digitized file.
7. Label and Packaging Specifications
Neck label size and placement, care label content (legal requirements vary by market), hangtag design and attachment method, polybag size, folding instructions, and carton dimensions.
Who Creates a Tech Pack?
Tech packs are typically created by fashion designers or technical designers with garment construction knowledge. Many brand founders hire freelance tech pack specialists for their first collection | you can find them on platforms like Upwork, or through specialized fashion tech services.

What Happens Without a Tech Pack?
Without a tech pack, the sample production process becomes a guessing game. Factories will do their best to interpret what you want | but interpretation means deviation. You might receive samples that are too boxy, too long, with the print 3cm higher than you imagined, or with a fabric that's close but not quite right.
Every revision round adds cost and time. A thorough tech pack that produces a good first sample saves weeks and thousands of euros over a production cycle.

Tech Pack Software and Tools
The most common tools for tech pack creation are Adobe Illustrator (for technical sketches) combined with Excel or Google Sheets (for spec sheets and BOM). Purpose-built software like Techpacker, Stitchit, and Audaces are also used by larger brands. For a first collection, Illustrator and a well-structured spreadsheet is entirely sufficient.
