Every streetwear brand eventually wrestles with the same question: what GSM should our hoodie be. The answer sounds like a technical detail but it is actually the single most consequential fabric decision a brand makes. GSM defines the hand feel, the warmth, the drape, the silhouette on the body, the shipping cost, the retail price positioning, and the customer’s subjective sense of quality when they first pick up the garment. This guide walks through the standard hoodie GSM ranges and what each one is actually for.

What GSM Means

GSM stands for grams per square meter. It is the mass of one square meter of the finished fabric measured in grams. Higher GSM means the fabric is denser and heavier per unit area. It is objective and measurable, which is why serious tech packs specify GSM instead of vague terms like “heavyweight” or “premium.”

For hoodies specifically, GSM is a proxy for how much yarn is packed into every square of fabric, which in turn drives warmth, opacity, structure, drape and durability. It is the first number a buyer should look at when comparing hoodie fabric options across manufacturers.

How GSM Affects Feel, Warmth and Drape

Three things change as you climb the GSM ladder.

Hand feel. Lightweight fabrics feel soft, thin and fluid in the hand. Heavier fabrics feel substantial, structured and dense. The customer’s first physical impression when they pick up a hoodie in a store is dominated by GSM.

Warmth. Denser fabric traps more still air, which is the actual mechanism of insulation. A 480 GSM brushback hoodie is warmer than a 240 GSM french terry hoodie by a wide margin.

Drape. Lower GSM fabrics drape closer to the body and move with it. Higher GSM fabrics hold their shape, produce a more structured silhouette, and drop from the shoulder in a straighter line. Heavyweight hoodies read as boxier because the fabric is stiffer.

None of these is universally better. They are trade-offs against season, use case and brand positioning.

240 GSM: Lightweight Summer Hoodies

At 240 GSM the fabric is thin, breathable and packable. In french terry construction it drapes softly and works well for warm-weather layers, resort collections, and destinations where a hoodie is more style than warmth. Common use cases include Mediterranean summer drops, resort brands, and lightweight training pieces that need to move air.

Trade-offs at this weight: the fabric has less structure so silhouettes read closer to the body, printing on lightweight cotton needs careful hand-management to avoid stiffening the front panel, and opacity can be an issue on lighter colors. Not the weight for a signature statement piece.

320 GSM: The Standard Streetwear Hoodie

320 GSM is the default weight for a broad range of contemporary streetwear hoodies. It sits at the boundary between comfortable everyday wear and the structured feel that streetwear customers expect. Most mid-market hoodie programs from mainstream brands live somewhere between 300 and 340 GSM.

In french terry this weight produces a soft, versatile hoodie suitable for spring and autumn wear across most temperate climates. In brushback fleece it produces a slightly warmer, cozier piece with more of a classic sweatshirt hand.

The reason this range is so common is that it balances customer expectations of quality against production and shipping cost. It reads as substantial without pushing into ultra-heavyweight territory.

420 GSM: Premium Heavyweight

Between roughly 380 and 440 GSM is the premium heavyweight range. This is where a hoodie starts to feel like a considered garment. The fabric has real structure. It holds a boxy silhouette without needing an oversized fit block. Sleeves fall in a straight line from the shoulder. Rib cuffs and hem sit firmly on the arm and hip.

Brushback fleece at this weight is the workhorse of premium streetwear. The face is smooth and printable, the back is soft against the skin, and the fabric can absorb screen prints, embroidery and appliqué without visible distortion. Loopback french terry at the same GSM has a more athletic-heritage feel with visible loops on the interior.

This is the range where most independent premium streetwear brands sit. Customers can immediately feel the difference from a 300 GSM piece, which supports the premium price point.

480 to 640 GSM: Luxury Heavyweight

At 480 GSM and above the fabric enters ultra-heavyweight territory. The garment is a physical object first and a piece of apparel second. Boxy, structured, warm, and unmistakable in the hand. This is the territory occupied by heavyweight-focused streetwear labels that use fabric weight as a signature brand cue.

Above 550 GSM the fabric behaves almost like a light outerwear piece. Drying time after washing extends significantly. Shipping weight per unit becomes a real cost consideration on air freight. The garment is not for high-motion activity or hot climates but delivers unbeatable presence and warmth in the intended context.

At 640 GSM the fabric approaches the upper practical limit for a hoodie. It is a statement piece for cold-climate markets and brands whose identity is built around heavyweight construction.

Fabric Composition and Construction Interact With GSM

GSM alone does not tell the whole story. The construction and fiber composition change how a specific weight feels.

French terry. Knit with looped yarns on the inside face. Lighter hand than brushback at the same GSM. Breathable, drapes well, common in spring and autumn hoodies.

Brushback fleece. Terry that has been mechanically brushed on the interior to raise the loops into soft fibers. Warmer, softer, denser feel than french terry at equal weight. The default for classic sweatshirt-style hoodies.

Loopback fleece. Similar to french terry but with a distinctly athletic-heritage look and slightly heavier construction. Common in Japanese and premium heritage streetwear.

Cotton content. 100 percent cotton feels the most natural and holds print best but shrinks more and dries slowly. Cotton and polyester blends dry faster and hold shape but feel less premium. A small percentage of elastane adds recovery and comfort at the expense of pure cotton character.

Shrinkage and Pre-Wash Considerations

Raw cotton knit fabric shrinks. How much depends on the construction, the pre-treatment and the wash the customer eventually gives it. Serious hoodie production involves fabric that has been through a mechanical compaction step and often a pre-wash to relax fiber tension before cutting.

A well-pre-shrunk hoodie fabric should hold shrinkage below 5 percent on length and 3 percent on width in a home wash. Untreated fabric can shrink 8 percent or more, which is enough to move a Medium into the Small range after two washes and generate customer complaints.

Always request pre-shrinkage data with your fabric approval sample. Always run a wash test on your first pre-production sample. Always publish honest care instructions.

How to Test GSM Yourself

You do not need lab equipment to sanity-check GSM. A kitchen scale accurate to 1 gram and a ruler are enough for a rough check.

  1. Cut a 10cm by 10cm square of the fabric with a sharp blade against a metal ruler.
  2. Weigh the square on the kitchen scale. The reading is in grams.
  3. Multiply by 100. The result is GSM.

A 10cm by 10cm square is one hundredth of a square meter, so the weight in grams multiplied by 100 gives GSM. If the claimed weight is 320 GSM the square should weigh approximately 3.2 grams. Anything more than about 10 percent off is worth a conversation with the supplier.

GSM by Season and Market

GSM and Print Compatibility

Fabric weight interacts with the print method a brand chooses, and the interaction is often overlooked at the tech pack stage.

Lightweight fabric under 280 GSM has limited absorbency and can distort under heavy plastisol prints. Screen prints on very light fabric benefit from soft-hand additives that reduce the physical mass of the ink film. Digital direct-to-garment prints on lightweight cotton can produce visible edge stiffness if the ink lay-down is heavy.

Mid-weight fabrics between 300 and 420 GSM are the most forgiving. Screen prints, DTG, plastisol, discharge and sublimation all work well within this range. Embroidery sits flat without needing extra stabilizer weight.

Heavyweight fabrics above 450 GSM absorb print energy readily and produce rich, saturated results. Large-format prints across the entire chest or back panel look best on heavier ground fabrics because there is enough physical structure to support the print without wrinkling. Embroidery on heavyweight brushback fleece requires attention to backing choice to avoid puckering, particularly on knit constructions.

The best practice is to sample the print on the actual production fabric before signing off the artwork. What looks correct on a swatch behaves differently at production scale, and only a physical strike-off on the intended GSM gives a reliable preview.

GSM and Cost Factors

Higher GSM fabric costs more, but the relationship is not linear and there are several drivers a buyer should understand.

Yarn consumption. A 480 GSM fabric uses roughly twice as much yarn per square meter as a 240 GSM fabric. This directly affects raw material cost.

Knit machine time. Heavier fabrics run more slowly on the knitting machine. Machine hours per meter increase with GSM.

Dye uptake. Dyeing a heavier fabric requires more dye and more energy in the dye bath. Reactive dyes on heavyweight cotton scale roughly with fabric weight.

Shipping weight. A hoodie in 480 GSM fabric weighs almost twice what the same hoodie weighs in 240 GSM fabric. Air freight and courier shipping costs scale with weight. For a brand shipping direct-to-consumer, this becomes a meaningful line item.

Cutting yield. Heavier fabric is stiffer and can produce marginally lower fabric utilization on the cutting table. This is a small effect but real.

None of these should discourage a brand from choosing the right GSM. They should inform the decision so the retail price and the shipping model are set correctly at launch.
