US streetwear, gym wear and athleisure brands have been quietly diversifying manufacturing out of China for years, and Turkey has become one of the two or three destinations that most consistently show up on the shortlist. This page explains why an American label ends up producing in Istanbul, what shipping and payment actually look like, and what a US brand typically builds with Istanbul Clothing Factory.
Why US Brands Choose Turkey Over China
The short version: proximity, cost predictability, and a lower geopolitical risk surface. The long version is a stack of small structural advantages that add up.
- Duty and tariff clarity. Apparel of Chinese origin currently sits on top of a stack of Section 301 tariffs layered onto standard HTSUS rates for its category. Apparel of Turkish origin is dutied at the standard HTSUS rate for the category, no Section 301 uplift. For most cotton knitwear (hoodies, t-shirts, joggers) this is a meaningful landed-cost delta that a US importer can model month one.
- Proximity to Europe and to the US Atlantic. Turkey sits inside the EU Customs Union, which means if you eventually sell into UK, EU or DACH markets from the same production run, no re-export duty games. Air freight to any US hub is 4-6 days door-to-door. Sea freight is 25-35 days to LA/Long Beach, Newark, Houston or Miami, versus 35-50 days from South China with more schedule volatility.
- Fluent English merchandising. Turkey's textile industry has been export-oriented since the 1980s and has a deep bench of English-first merchandisers. Tech pack review, comments, revision cycles and shipping documents all happen in English without a translation lag.
- Timezone that actually works. Istanbul is UTC+3. That is 8 hours ahead of PST, 7 ahead of EST. Send a tech pack Wednesday morning New York, wake up Thursday to costed BOM and sample calendar. The gap is meaningfully more manageable than 13-15 hours to South China.
- Compliance culture matches US retail expectations. Nordstrom, Whole Foods, REI, Target and most big-box or premium multi-brand accounts require BSCI, SEDEX and OEKO-TEX documentation from suppliers. Turkish factories treat these as standard. ICF holds current BSCI, SEDEX, OEKO-TEX Standard 100, OCS, RCS and Better Cotton certifications.
Shipping to the US: What Actually Happens
For US-bound bulk shipments we typically use three modes:
- Express air (DHL, FedEx, UPS), 4-6 business days door-to-door to any US zip. Best for samples, first-order pilots, and small bulk runs under 200 kg. Fully tracked, single customs entry, delivered to your 3PL.
- Air freight consolidator, 7-10 days, warehouse-to-warehouse or door via customs broker. Better per-kg cost for bulk over 200 kg.
- Sea freight (LCL / FCL), 25-35 days port to port depending on US coast. LCL for orders under 3 CBM, FCL 20' or 40' for larger runs. Cheapest per unit but you need production calendar buffer.
We handle documentation on the Turkey side: commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin (Turkish Chamber of Commerce EUR.1 or ATR, plus generic certificate of origin for the US), and product-category HTS code recommendation for your customs broker. We do not act as your US customs broker, you or your 3PL retain that role.
US Payment Methods and Terms
Three payment methods cover 95% of US brand orders with ICF:
- International wire (SWIFT), the standard. Your US bank sends USD to our Turkish USD account, we convert on our side. Wire fees are typically $25-45 depending on the sending bank; the transfer clears in 1-3 business days.
- PayPal, accepted for samples and small deposits up to a few thousand USD. Faster settlement but higher fee. Good for pre-production sampling rounds.
- Third-party escrow, for first-time relationships some US brands prefer Escrow.com or Payoneer Escrow. Funds are held by the escrow agent, released to us on your shipment sign-off. We are set up for this.
Standard commercial terms for US brands are 30% deposit on production start, 70% balance before shipment leaves Istanbul. On repeat runs we can extend to 50/50 or open account with proven history. We do not offer net-30 or net-60 to first-time accounts.
Duties, HTS Codes and Landed Cost (Primer)
This is orientation, not tax advice, your US customs broker owns the final classification. That said, most of the categories we ship to US brands fall inside HTSUS Chapter 61 (knitted apparel) and Chapter 62 (woven apparel). Hoodies of cotton typically land in 6110.20; cotton t-shirts in 6109.10; cotton knit joggers in 6103.42 or 6104.62; recycled polyester athleisure often in 6110.30. Standard MFN duty rates for these categories, applied to Turkish-origin goods, are meaningfully below combined Section 301 + MFN rates on the same categories from China. Combined with lower express shipping cost per unit for small runs, landed cost typically comes out competitive for premium and mid-premium US streetwear.
The important point: ask your US broker to run a landed-cost model for Turkey-origin vs your current sourcing region. We supply you with correct HTS suggestions and the certificate of origin your broker needs.
What US Brands Typically Build with ICF
Roughly 60% of our US-brand production is heavyweight streetwear, 380-480 GSM French terry hoodies, 220-260 GSM heavy jersey t-shirts, brushed fleece crewnecks, and cargo joggers. The other 40% is athleisure and gym wear: technical polyester-elastane blends, seamless base layers, brushed fleece joggers, oversized long-sleeve tees. Full-package: cut and sew, in-house screen print / DTF / puff / embroidery / woven label, private-label packaging, hangtags, polybag or eco-mailer.
We work with US brands ranging from first-collection independent labels dropping 150-piece capsules to established mid-market brands running 5,000-15,000 pieces per style per season.
