Since Brexit finalised on 1 January 2021, UK streetwear and independent apparel labels have been redrawing their supplier maps. The old EU-first sourcing logic broke overnight, and China's timezone gap plus tariff volatility never rebuilt confidence. Turkey has been the quiet winner. This page explains the current UK-Turkey trade context, what shipping and compliance actually look like, and what UK brands typically build with Istanbul Clothing Factory.
Post-Brexit UK-Turkey Trade Context
When the UK left the EU, it also left the EU-Turkey Customs Union relationship it inherited via the EU. On 29 December 2020 the UK and Turkey signed the UK-Turkey Free Trade Agreement, which came into force 1 January 2021. The FTA largely preserved the pre-Brexit tariff position for most industrial and apparel goods, so a UK importer bringing in Turkish-origin apparel today can claim 0% preferential duty under the FTA, provided origin is properly declared.
Origin evidence for UK imports takes one of two forms:
- EUR.1 movement certificate, issued by the Turkish Chamber of Commerce, stamped for each consignment. This is the standard document for bulk shipments.
- Invoice declaration, a short signed statement on the commercial invoice, accepted for consignments up to a threshold value. Faster and used for small express shipments.
We provide both. Your UK customs broker or freight forwarder submits them to HMRC at import to claim the preferential rate. Without the origin document you pay UK MFN duty on the goods, which for most cotton knitwear is around 12%, versus 0% with the FTA. Do not skip this step.
Shipping to the UK: Modes and Realistic Timings
UK is one of our simplest export corridors. Four modes cover almost every scenario:
- Road + ro-ro ferry (3-4 days), the workhorse for UK bulk. Trucks leave Istanbul, cross via Bulgaria–Serbia–Central Europe or via Trieste ferry, board the Dover/Purfleet/Immingham ferry, deliver to your UK 3PL. Most cost-effective per unit at 500-5,000 piece runs.
- Express air (1-2 days), DHL, FedEx, UPS, TNT door-to-door to any UK postcode. Best for samples and first-order pilots.
- Air freight consolidator (4-6 days), warehouse to warehouse LHR/MAN, then trucked to your address by customs broker.
- Sea freight (10-14 days), LCL or FCL to Felixstowe, Southampton, London Gateway. Best for large runs over 3 CBM.
Border delays at Dover have stabilised in 2025-2026. UK customs clearance is fast for shipments with clean origin paperwork.
VAT and Duties: A Practical Primer
This is orientation, not tax advice, your UK VAT-registered importer of record retains responsibility. That said, the standard structure is:
- Import duty, 0% for most apparel of Turkish origin under the UK-Turkey FTA. Non-originating goods pay MFN rates (typically 8-12% for most cotton knitwear categories under the UK Global Tariff).
- Import VAT, 20% on the customs value + duty + freight. Recoverable by VAT-registered UK businesses via their VAT return; effectively a cash-flow item, not a cost.
- Postponed VAT accounting, most UK VAT-registered importers use PVA, which defers the physical VAT payment and accounts for it on the VAT return instead. This eliminates the border cash outlay.
Duty and VAT calculations are applied to the customs value, which includes goods value + freight + insurance to the UK border. Ex Works (EXW) Istanbul is a common Incoterm for UK brands; DAP UK warehouse is available on request.
UK Compliance: Modern Slavery Act, GPSR, Care Labels
Three UK compliance items come up on nearly every UK brand engagement:
- Modern Slavery Act 2015. UK businesses over £36m turnover must publish an annual statement covering their supply chain due diligence. Our BSCI and SEDEX audits (renewed annually) are recognised due-diligence evidence. We can supply audit certificates under NDA for your MSA statement referencing.
- GPSR (General Product Safety Regulations). The GB variant of GPSR keeps the same principles as the EU version and applies to all apparel placed on the UK market. Obligations sit with the UK importer or brand, but we support with the underlying inputs: OEKO-TEX Standard 100 (harmful substances), fibre composition per label, drawcord safety per EN 14682 for childrenswear, batch traceability.
- Care labels and fibre composition. UK care labels must be legible, permanent, and follow the ISO 3758 symbol system. We print care labels in English by default; multi-language labels (EN/FR/DE/ES) are standard for brands selling across UK + EU.
What UK Brands Typically Build with ICF
Roughly half of our UK book is heavyweight streetwear, 380-480 GSM French terry hoodies, 220-260 GSM heavy jersey tees, oversized crewnecks, cargo joggers. The other half splits between athleisure (technical polyester-elastane, brushed fleece joggers), premium basics (organic cotton essentials, garment-dyed heavyweight tees), and technical outerwear pieces (light shell jackets, coach jackets). We handle full-package: cut and sew, in-house screen print / DTF / embroidery / puff / woven label / hangtag / eco polybag or recycled mailer.
UK brands range from independents dropping 150-piece capsules to established mid-market labels running 5,000-15,000 pieces per style per season.
