What Counts as Heavyweight?
For knit streetwear fabric, the industry benchmark is:
- 240-320 GSM, mid-weight (standard hoodies)
- 320-380 GSM, premium mid-weight
- 420-500 GSM, heavyweight (the premium streetwear signature range)
- 500+ GSM, extra heavyweight (specialised, shipping and construction limitations kick in)
420 GSM is where the fabric starts to visibly change character on the body, it stops draping fluidly and starts holding its own architecture. 480 GSM is the sweet spot for most premium streetwear hoodies. 500 GSM is where the brand is making a statement about weight itself as a design element.
The Premium Streetwear Market Context
Heavyweight streetwear grew out of the Los Angeles and Tokyo skate and streetwear scenes in the mid-2010s and became the dominant premium hoodie language by 2020. The commercial logic: at 480 GSM the fabric costs meaningfully more, and the finished garment can retail two or three times what a 300 GSM hoodie retails at. 1. Heavyweight French Terry Loopback
The base of the category. Same three-thread loopback structure as standard French terry, built at 420-500 GSM by using thicker yarn and higher knit density. Smooth face, un-brushed loops on the back, drapes with authority. Prints beautifully. Our default recommendation for a first heavyweight hoodie.
2. Diagonal French Terry
Same base structure but knitted with the loop rows angled diagonally (twill direction) instead of straight across. Two visible advantages: (a) diagonal loop structure adds a subtle textural line to the back that reads as more considered than standard French terry; (b) better dimensional recovery, resists the horizontal stretch that heavy standard French terry can develop at the hem after wash cycles.
3. Brushback Heavyweight Fleece
The traditional path. Heavyweight French terry with the back loops brushed into a soft nap. Warmer, softer against skin, more classic-sweatshirt in hand. Best for winter-facing brands where "cozy" is part of the positioning. Slightly less print-friendly on the back due to the nap; face prints identically to heavyweight French terry.
4. Double Face
The premium construction. Two separate knitted layers bonded (thermally, mechanically, or with a stitched connection) into a single fabric. Feels dense and structured with sculptural drape. Often used at 480-550 GSM effective weight. Face can be one composition (e.g. combed cotton for print quality) and back another (e.g. brushed fleece for warmth). Higher fabric cost but produces a hoodie that feels different from any single-layer heavyweight, this is what the category-leading Japanese and Los Angeles brands use for their flagship pieces.
Construction Differences That Matter
A factory quoting heavyweight at the same lead time and price as their standard fabric is either not actually building it right, or hasn't understood what changes. Real differences:
- Yarn count. Heavier yarns (lower yarn count number = thicker yarn) required. Fabric mill has to knit slower to prevent needle strain.
- Knit density. More loops per cm to hold the structure. Fabric mill machine settings change; knitting is slower.
- Needle and thread. Ballpoint knit needles in heavier sizes (Nm 90 minimum, often Nm 100). Poly-cotton core-spun thread rather than standard poly.
- Seam construction. Overlock with cover-stitch reinforcement on stress points (armhole, side seam, hood attachment). Double-needle top stitch on hems.
- Cutting. Fabric must relax on the cutting table longer (48-72 hours minimum) before spreading, otherwise the finished garment shrinks in unexpected directions.
- Wash and finishing. Slower dry cycle at lower temperature to prevent excessive shrinkage.
